WHY IS THIS RESEARCH STUDY HAPPENING?

I am a Jing Method™ clinical and sports massage therapist, specialising in the treatment of persistent musculoskeletal pain. From my private garden clinic in the idyllic village of Laddingford Kent, I help people by alleviating their pain symptoms from conditions such as back pain, migraines, and frozen shoulder.

I have been practicing massage since qualifying as a sports massage therapist in 2017, but I was keen to develop my skills and embarked upon a 3 year degree level qualification (BTEC 6) in advanced clinical and sports massage therapy. This is the highest level of education a massage therapist can achieve in the UK. It is overseen by experts in the field of Musculoskeletal Pain, Education, Sports Science and Psychology.

Now in the final year of my course, we are given the opportunity to design and carry out a study into the effects of a clinical massage wellness program. I have chosen to investigate the effects of the Jing Method™ clinical massage in adults with asthma.

WHAT DOES THE STUDY CONSIST OF?

The study consists of two phases:
Phase 1: Monitoring your asthma symptoms

The study lasts for 13 weeks and starts on the 19th Sep. The first 6 weeks of the study is known as the control period. Within the control period you will be monitoring your asthma symptoms and experience of living with asthma, by completing two methods of asthma assessment. You will be asked to complete an online asthma questionnaire, which is a validated assessment tool, entitled ‘Asthma Control Test’, on a weekly basis. In addition to this, for weeks five and six of the control period, you will be provided with a peak flow device to measure and record your forced expiration twice a day, morning and night before taking your asthma medication.

Phase 2: The Treatment

Directly following the control period, the 7 weeks treatment period will begin. Which will require you to attend a clinical massage therapy appointment on a Tues, Weds, or Thurs at 9am, 10:30am, 12pm or 1:30pm, during weeks one, three and five. At the beginning of weeks two, four and six, you will be provided with a pre-recorded video, offering you a breathing practise, a self-massage technique, using a soft massage ball which will be provided, and a stretch or mobilisation exercise. These practices will require approximately fifteen minutes of your time each day for the duration of the treatment phase. The three pre-recorded videos will differ in content.

You will be required to complete the same two methods of asthma assessment as for the control phase.

HOW WILL I BENEFIT FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE STUDY?

DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?

I have worked with people who have asthma, other breathing difficulties and anxiety induced hyperventilation.  The hands-on treatment and self-care instruction aims to release musculoskeletal pain and tension within the thorax and breathing muscles. Breath instruction will help you to utilise the main muscle of breathing, the diaphragm, and will teach you how to breath more efficiently. At the very minimum I hope that you will feel more relaxed in body, mind and breath.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE STUDY?

At the end of the study you will be asked for your feedback about what you liked and disliked, what you felt worked and didn't work for you.

Once my research is published I will share my results with you in an online presentation.

Our work together doesn't have to stop, as you would be most welcome to continue receiving massage therapy and self-care advice from me.
This research project is based on tried and trusted techniques used within clinical practise and would normally cost £225. In this study the fee is £125 and includes the supply of PEF monitor and two soft massage balls.

If cost is a barrier to joining the study, then please apply and we can discuss this matter further.

I WANT TO PARTICIPATE WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Great news! Please register your interest by completing the form above. Upon receipt I will email you (please check your junk email!) a questionnaire and letter outlining the study. When the application deadline ends, 21 August we will arrange a mutually convenient time to meet for a 1-2-1 video call, where we can discuss your asthma experience further, and I can introduce you to the study and the assessment tools being used to measure our progress. Completion of a consent form and payment will secure your place.

Thank you for considering participating in this study.
